What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibre that was widely used in construction materials from around 1930 until the 1990s. There are three types of asbestos fibres still commonly found in buildings across the UK:

  • White (chrysotile): used in roofs, ceilings, walls and floors.
  • Blue (crocidolite): used in spray-on coatings, pipe insulation, plastics and cement products.
  • Brown (amosite): used in cement sheets, ceiling tiles and thermal insulation products.

Due to its hazardous nature, it’s crucial that you contact a qualified asbestos removal company to remove and dispose of asbestos correctly.

Why is asbestos dangerous?

Since the 2000s, the risks of asbestos-containing materials became widely known, however, by then it had already been used in a range of materials. When materials that contain asbestos deteriorate, they release hazardous and toxic fibres. If inhaled, these fibres can cause serious long-term health conditions such as lung cancer, Mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the chest and the abdominal cavity) or Asbestosis (where the lungs become scarred with fibrous tissue).

How is asbestos identified?

If you suspect that you have asbestos in your property, it’s vital that you call specialists to identify its presence. There are two types of surveys that can be undertaken to identify asbestos:

  • Management Asbestos Survey
A Management Asbestos Survey is a visual, non-invasive inspection that requires minimal sampling of areas where the presence of asbestos is suspected.
  • Refurbishment/Demolition Survey
A Refurbishment/Demolition Survey is more invasive than a Management Asbestos Survey and is undertaken when a building is going to be upgraded, refurbished or demolished.

How do you remove asbestos?

  • Asbestos Encapsulation
If asbestos isn’t widespread throughout a property, we will use asbestos encapsulation. This involves a layer of sealant being applied to the surface of the contaminated area or using a supporting framework. This will stop fibres from becoming damaged, disturbed, or airborne.
  • Asbestos Abatement
If asbestos is found to be widespread on your property, we will use a process called asbestos abatement. Asbestos abatement is a more invasive measure and requires the property to be vacated so that areas can be sealed off. Then, contaminated areas will be demolished and disposed of.

Spray Foam Insulation Removal

Spray foam insulation is a liquid foam that is sprayed onto a surface and expands on contact to create a foam layer. Spray foam insulation can be applied in wall cavities, lofts, roof membranes, exterior walls and to small gaps or cracks within a property.

Mineral Wool Insulation Removal

Mineral wool insulation, also known as rock wool wall insulation and stone wool insulation is created using a range of raw materials. These raw materialsare melted at high temperatures before being spun to form fibres. This results in a wool-like material which serves as effective property insulation.

Fibreglass Insulation Removal

Fibreglass insulation is made of glass and sand. When sand is melted it can be passed through a narrow nozzle and solidifies to form a thin fibre. Fibreglass insulation is then formed by these fibres being compressed together which results in a dense, wool-like material.
